"Isn't my child too young for English?" β I hear this question from parents in Nuremberg almost daily. The answer is clear: No! Quite the opposite!
As an English teacher for kindergarten children in Nuremberg, I experience it again and again: Three-year-olds happily sing English songs, four-year-olds chatter whole sentences, five-year-olds understand complex stories. Too early doesn't exist β only done wrong.
What does science say?
Hundreds of studies worldwide show: The years between 0 and 7 are the golden phase for language learning. During this time, the brain is particularly receptive to languages.
Why kindergarten children learn English so well:
- Perfect pronunciation: Up to about age 7, children can perfectly imitate sounds
- Fear-free: Small children have no fear of mistakes
- Natural learning: They learn through imitation, not through grammar rules
- Sponge effect: They absorb words and sentences like a sponge
π§ Interesting fact
A three-year-old child can learn up to 10 new words PER DAY β and retain them long-term! For adults, it's only 1-2 words.
My experience from 10 years of kindergarten English in Nuremberg
I've been teaching the Happy Hearts course for 3-6 year-olds in Nuremberg for over 10 years. What I observe:
Children who start at ages 3-4:
- Have perfect pronunciation (often better than mine!)
- Speak fearlessly and naturally
- Switch effortlessly between German and English
- See English as something normal, not as a "foreign language"
Children who only start at ages 8-10:
- Must learn consciously (grammar rules, memorize vocabulary)
- Often afraid of making mistakes
- Translate in their head from German to English
- Struggle with pronunciation
Both can successfully learn English! But the path is different.
What does good English teaching for kindergarten children look like?
Here's the key: English for three-year-olds is COMPLETELY different from English for ten-year-olds!
A good kindergarten English course in Nuremberg should offer:
- 100% playful: No worksheets, no homework!
- Lots of movement: Dancing, jumping, movement games
- Songs & rhymes: Children love music and learn fantastically through it
- Picture books: Simple, colorful stories
- Crafts & painting: Creative activities with English instructions
- Repetitions: Children need 20-30 repetitions to internalize a word
- Positive atmosphere: Praise, encourage, never criticize
π‘ Example from my Happy Hearts course in Nuremberg
We don't learn colors with flashcards, but with a song: "Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue β I can sing a rainbow!" We dance to it. After 3 weeks, ALL children know the colors β without having "learned" them.
Common concerns from parents (and my answers)
Concern 1: "My child will confuse German and English!"
My answer: This is temporary and completely normal! Bilingual children initially mix languages β but this settles after a few months. It does NOT harm development.
Concern 2: "My child doesn't even speak German properly yet!"
My answer: English even helps with learning German! Multilingual children develop better language awareness. BUT: If your child has serious language problems, talk to a speech therapist first.
Concern 3: "Isn't that too much for a small child?"
My answer: Not when done correctly! One hour of playing, singing, dancing per week doesn't overwhelm any child. On the contrary β the children in my courses in Nuremberg LOVE it!
Concern 4: "What if I don't speak English myself?"
My answer: That's okay! Your child learns English in class. You just need to support β e.g., listen to English children's songs, watch English shows. Perfect English is not necessary!
What parents in Nuremberg say about our kindergarten course
After 10 years of Happy Hearts courses, I've experienced many happy parents. Here are some typical feedback:
- "My daughter sings English songs all day!"
- "I'm amazed how much my 4-year-old already understands!"
- "The course was the highlight of the week β he never wanted to miss it!"
- "In primary school, she was ahead of everyone!"
From what age does an English course make sense?
My personal recommendation for parents in Nuremberg:
- From age 3: Ideal! Group courses with songs and games
- From age 4: Perfect! Children are more focused
- From age 5: Great! Preparation for primary school begins
Under age 3, I would not recommend a course β but listening to English songs and looking at picture books at home is great!
What you can do at home
Even without a course, you can playfully introduce your kindergarten child to English:
- English children's songs: "The Wheels on the Bus", "Baby Shark"
- English shows: "Peppa Pig", "Bluey" (suitable for 3-year-olds too!)
- Picture books in English: Even if you read haltingly yourself!
- Count numbers: Count in English when climbing stairs
- Name colors: "Look, a red car!"
My conclusion: Yes, English for kindergarten children makes sense!
After 10 years of experience with the Happy Hearts kindergarten course in Nuremberg, I can say: It is NOT too early!
But it must be done correctly:
- β Playfully, not like school
- β With fun, not with pressure
- β Through songs, games, movement
- β With an experienced, patient teacher
When these conditions are met, your child benefits from it for life!
